Ever heard that old expression, “you get what you pay for?” Well, when it comes to tequila that does not necessarily apply.
While expensive tequilas are considered “top-shelf” for a reason, good tequila does not have to break the bank.
Several affordable brands out there are 100 percent agave and good enough to drink straight—no lime, salt, or ice. Agave tequila is made from the agave plant; the heart is harvested, stripped of its leaves and heated to convert the starch into sugar that is fermented and distilled, which results in what we know as tequila.
Here are three fine agave tequilas, all available for less than $30.
Cimmaron Blanco has a bright, crisp, clean flavor that is chock full of baked agave. This tequila uses the same type of single-estate agave that its maker, Enrique Fonseca, uses in other expensive top-shelf products such as Fuenteseca and Artenom 1446. A 1-liter bottle sells for about $20.
Pueblo Viejo Reposado is well regarded among the Tequila Matchmaker community, often rating higher than tequilas that cost two or three times as much. Its flavor is characterized by agave, vanilla and cinnamon, making it light and easy to drink. A 750 ml bottle costs approximately $20.
Olmeca Altos, a brand that originated in the United Kingdom, produces two intriguing budget tequilas. Olmeca Altos Plata won the blind tasting in San Francisco at the 2014 Tequila Challenge, while Olmeca Altos Reposado finished second in the Seattle version of that event. Although their products usually cost a bit more because of a slower production method, both Olmeca Altos Plata and Reposado sell for about $25 for a 750 ml bottle.
Of course, one can always find a reason to shoot good ‘ole straight tequila. However, if cocktails are more your style, you can find recipes online for some of the most popular drinks that incorporate tequila. Here are some popular tequila drinks you can try! Recipes are from www.thespruce.com
