Hattiesburg, MS

It’s common to experience a flood of memories and flashbacks as you enjoy the taste of food. Flavors have a unique way of transporting us through time and invoke a happy response in the brain. Perhaps you experience this when enjoying certain drinks. Well, in the case of island cocktails, just one sip could have your dreaming of white sandy beaches as you hear the ocean waves crashing against the shore. While sipping a fruit flavored cocktail isn’t exactly the same as being on a sun-soaked island, you’ll still feel relaxed and be left dreaming of a getaway. So today on the blog, enjoy these four tropical vacations in a glass.

Daiquiri

The first ever recorded recipe of this beverage was in the late 1800s by Jennings Cox in Cuba. The legend of this OG cocktail tells a story of Jennings Cox, who threw a party for friends and ran out of gin. So, he used rum instead. However, just because he wrote about this cocktail doesn’t mean that he invented it. There could just as easily have been someone else in history that subbed rum for gin. Daiquiris are known to include rum, citrus, sugar, and water, which have long since been used on shipping voyages to prevent scurvy. But back then, the drink was referred to as “grog”.

Mai Tai

Another poplar tropical cocktail, the Mai Tai was supposedly invented by two gentlemen back in 1944 named Victor Jules Bergeron and Ernest Raymond Beaumont Gantt. Victor decided to jazz up his traditional Daiquiri while some friends were visiting from Tahiti. The drink became so popular that it caused a rum shortage during the 1950s. And the word “Mai Tai” actually means “the best”.

Painkiller

No, we aren’t talking about pain relievers in your cabinet. It’s another famous cocktail throughout history that was invented by Daphne Henderson in the British Virgin Islands in 1971. It became so popular that Pusser’s trademarked the cocktail in the 1980s. If you own a bar and sell this drink, you must serve it with Pusser’s rum or you could be liable for a lawsuit! The Painkiller became the official drink of Puerto Rico in 1978. If you aren’t familiar with the Painkiller, it’s almost the same as a Pina Colada, a tropical cocktail first introduced in the 1940s.

Aperol Spritz

If the sandy beaches of the South aren’t what you had in mind for your vacation in a glass, take a tour with us to the beaches of Italy as we introduce the Aperol Spritz. First introduced in Italy back in the 1800s, it’s the ideal citrusy cocktail to keep cool during the warm summer months. Its ingredients are also easy to keep on hand, Aperol, Prosecco, and club soda. You can toy with the ratios by making it more boozy or less boozy, depending on how much club soda you add.
