Labor Day weekend is almost here, and that represents the unofficial end to the summer. If you’re planning a get-together this Labor Day, here are five delicious alcoholic drink recipes that are sure to please any crowd.
Gins and Roses
This fruity concoction that’s a play on words was created at Nickel & Diner in New York City. Just take a half-ounce each of Aperol, rose, and peppercorn infused syrup and Aperol and pour them into a shaker. Add 1.5 ounces of Tanqueray or your gin of choice, and shake it all vigorously. Pour it over the rocks and enjoy.
Watermelon Sling
Honor one of the signature fruits of the summer with this cocktail. Put this list of ingredients in your shaker: 1.5 ounces of white whiskey, 1.25 ounces of watermelon juice, and 0.5 ounces each of simple syrup, Aperol, and lemon juice. Add ice to the shaker, shake, strain, and pour over ice. Top it with soda water. The inventors of this drink at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar in Las Vegas recommend a garnish of lemon and a sprig of rosemary.
The Jojo
SHOREbar in Santa Monica created this cocktail that is perfect for the end of summer. Muddle a strawberry. Then take 2 ounces of your favorite vodka, .25 ounces of St. Germain (an elderflower liqueur), .75 ounces of simple syrup, and a half ounce of lemon juice. Add those ingredients and ice to a shaker, and shake vigorously. We recommend topping off with some Prosecco.
Mahalo Mai Tai
If you or your guests like rum, this is the drink to prepare for your Labor Day bash. Take a shaker and pour in the following: one ounce of your favorite white rum, an ounce of triple sec, an ounce each of orange juice and pineapple juice, and a half-ounce of lime juice. The original recipe, created at Mahalo, a now-closed establishment in Chicago, calls for an ounce of demerara syrup—which has a darker color and hints of caramel in the flavor—but you can substitute simple syrup. Shake for about 10 seconds, then pour your concoction into a 16-ounce glass filled with crushed ice. Top it off with an ounce of dark rum.
Chili chili bang bang
The brainchild of Eden Rock on St. Barts in the Caribbean, this cocktail is sure to spice up your get-together. That spice comes from the main ingredient, 5 ounces of jalapeno-infused tequila. Then pour it into a shake with 3 ounces of passion fruit liqueur, 2 ounces of lemon juice, and an ounce of liquid sugar. Shake, strain over ice, and add a chili pepper for garnish—and a little more heat.
