Looking for a Refreshing Summer Beer Style? Try One of These

Hattiesburg, MS

Is there anything as refreshing as a cold beer on a hot summer day? Whether pool side, cooking out with family and friends or working in the yard, sometimes a good, ol’ faithful beer is the only drink that hits the spot. With summer in full swing, our alcoholic beverage gurus compiled a list of some of our favorite summertime beer styles that taste great and go down easy.

Pilsner

Pilsner-style beers originated from the Czech city of Plzeň in the mid-19th century. They are light to medium bodied with a clean and crisp taste and a clear, golden color — like most of the popular mass-produced beers you’ll find. Pilsners are often characterized by their high carbonation and a dry finish, making them a popular choice for those seeking a thirst-quenching beverage. Pilsner Urquell was the first brand of Pilsner produced in the Czech Republic over 150 years ago — and it is still produced today.

Kölsch

Originating from Cologne (Köln), Germany, Kölsch-style beers are a unique and refreshing hybrid of ale and lager. Characterized by a light to medium body, straw-yellow color and a clean, crisp finish, Kölsch beers boast a smooth, slightly fruity flavor. Similar to wine, certain rules must be met to call a beer a Kölsch. A brewer has to follow a certain process to create authentic Kölsch beer, and it has to be produced within 30 miles of Cologne. Look for the difference the next time you’re at Hattiesburg’s Lincoln Road Package Store. American beers are labeled “Kölsch-syle” as opposed to simply “Kölsch.”

Hefeweizen

A traditional German wheat beer, Hefeweizen is a cloudy, effervescent gold beer with a refreshing finish. Originating from Bavaria, Hefeweizen-style beers are brewed with a substantial proportion of wheat, typically around 50-70 percent, alongside barley malts. This beer has a distinctive yeast strain that incorporates the fruity and spicy flavors of banana, cloves and vanilla. Hefeweizen is often enjoyed with a slice of citrus fruit — often lemon or orange — to enhance its bright, fruity notes. This makes it a perfect choice for a refreshing beer on a warm day.

Lincoln Road Package Store has a healthy selection of whatever style of beer suits your palate. Come on in and ask us any questions you have. You can also call us at (601) 268-3677 or send an e-mail to jamiefarris@gmail.com.
