Exploring Popular Mixed Drinks

The holiday season is in full swing. If you are planning to host an event this year, is your bar prepared? With a little planning and some shrewd purchases, you can eliminate most of the stress from a holiday cocktail happy hour by creating large-batch cocktails for everyone to enjoy. That’s why, today on the blog, we take a look at four large-batch cocktail recipes to consider.
Spiced apple bourbon punch
Move over, pumpkin… we think apple is an underrated fall flavor. Combine two cups of apple cider, 1 ½ cups of your favorite bourbon, a half-cup of apple brandy, ¾ cup of fresh lemon juice, a half-cup of cinnamon syrup and a half-teaspoon of bitters. Stir well then refrigerate the mixture for at least 45 minutes. If you want to serve the punch hot, bring it to a gentle simmer in a saucepan over medium heat.
Eggnog White Russian
The traditional White Russian combines vodka, coffee liqueur, and heavy cream. In this version, just take one cup of vodka, one cup of coffee liqueur such as Kahlua, and two cups each of cold brew coffee and eggnog – you can use a non-alcoholic eggnog or, if you want to make your cocktail especially strong, one that contains alcohol. Place all the ingredients in a large serving pitcher, stir and refrigerate the cocktail for at least 45 minutes. Serve in small rocks glasses with a single large ice cube in each glass.
The Bottled Manhattan
A Manhattan is served best cold, but how do you keep a large-batch cocktail properly chilled throughout the event? By portioning it into one-liter bottles. Take 1 ½ cups of 100-proof rye whiskey, a cup of water, ⅔ cup of sweet vermouth and six dashes of bitters. Stir them together into a large-spouted measuring cup, then pour it into a freezer-safe glass liter bottle or a clean, plastic liter soda bottle. Freeze each bottle overnight and then move them to the refrigerator at least an hour before serving.
Cranberry punch
These days, it is a good idea for any cocktail party or happy hour to have a non-alcoholic option, although this one takes some additional prep time. Take eight cups of cranberries – they can be fresh or frozen – and pulse them in a food processor until they are coarsely chopped. Stir in three cups of granulated sugar and two tablespoons of ground sumac. Cover the mixture and keep it at room temperature, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved. This can take at least 12 hours or up to a full day. Strain the mixture, then pour it into a punch bowl filled with ice along with six cups of chilled sparkling water.
