Mixed drinks, or cocktails, are alcoholic beverages combined with other types of liquors, juices, sodas, syrups, or flavorings. Often, mixed drinks are garnished with herbs, vegetables, or fresh fruit. There are many different types of cocktails available to suit any need, whether you’re hanging out at home watching movies, going out with friends, or hosting a holiday gathering. You have your favorite libations but may not be as familiar with what others prefer. So, today on the blog, explore popular mixed drinks so that you can be ready whether you have friends over for dinner or are planning a get-together with family.
Margarita – Known as a classic Mexican cocktail, this tequila based mixed drink is combined with fresh lime juice, sweetener, and triple sec, which is an orange flavored liqueur that adds a citrus twist to your adult beverage. While pre-mixes are available that combine artificial juice, sugar, and orange flavoring, our suggestion is to fresh squeeze limes, and opt for a sweetener like agave, and choose a high-quality triple sec for a better flavor. You can serve margaritas on the rocks (over ice) or frozen (blended with ice like a slushy). Don’t forget to salt the rim, if you like!
Martini – Made with gin or vodka and vermouth, a martini is a classic cocktail that’s simple. It’s only garnished with an olive or a lemon twist. However, there are other martini variations, but the GOAT version is our favorite. Serve in a chilled Martini glass.
Old Fashioned – We love this classic cocktail that includes whiskey, bitters, and simple syrup, garnished with either a cherry or an orange slice (and some people like both). Instead of using bright red maraschino cherries with high fructose corn syrup, opt for Luxardo cherries, which are available at your local liquor store or from online retailers.
Mojito – This Cuban cocktail is popular during the summer and is known as the official drink of the Kentucky Derby but there are no rules against enjoying this cocktail any time of year. It combines rum, fresh lime juice, mint, and simple syrup. We recommend making your own simple syrup by using equal parts water and sugar. Bring the water to a boil, then add the sugar and stir frequently until the sugar is dissolved. Store the leftover syrup in a sealed container in the fridge.
Cosmopolitan – Known as a trendy cocktail, the cosmopolitan is made by combining vodka, cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, and triple sec. Bartenders usually serve this classic cocktail in a Martini glass garnished with a lime slice.
For warm cocktails, consider a Hot Toddy, Spiced Rum Milk Punch, or spiked Eggnog. There are many other famous and popular cocktails available whether you prefer fruit juice mixers or something less sweet.
