The Margarita is one of the most famous and best cocktails and has been around for nearly one hundred years. Whether you prefer your Margarita frozen or on the rocks, we’ve got some interesting facts about this cocktail that are hitting our blog just in time for Cinco de Mayo. So, grab a bag of chips and some salsa and whip of your favorite Margarita to sip while you enjoy our blog today.

Origins of the Margarita

There is much debate as to who actually invented the Margarita and the origins behind this cocktail, but we do know it originated in Mexico during the Prohibition Era, between 1920-1933. Some rumors say that the Margarita is influenced by two other popular cocktails, the Daisy and the Sidecar. Both of these American cocktails pack a sour and citrusy punch and were popular drinks before the Prohibition Era. Rumor has it that when alcohol was banned in the U.S., some people in neighboring cities ventured to Mexico in search of alcohol. And, that Mexican bartenders tried their hand at creating cocktails similar to the Daisy and the Sidecar, replacing some of the ingredients with ones more readily available in Mexico. Those ingredients being tequila and lime instead of brandy and lemon. And the word “Daisy” in Spanish is, you guessed it, Margarita!

Another fact about this classic alcoholic drink is that it’s stayed fairly true to its original recipe which includes two parts tequila, one part orange liqueur, and one-part fresh lime juice. In our opinion, the only way to enjoy a Margarita is with fresh lime juice and we prefer Agave as the sweetener. And don’t skimp by using the juice from plastic limes even though the bottle says 100% juice. That doesn’t count! You must use fresh squeezed lime juice if you want a tasty, good quality Margarita. So, take the extra few minutes to make a fresh Margarita and skip the premade mixes that are loaded with sugar. Trust us!

Margarita with a twist

It’s hard to top the classic Margarita, but if you want to give it a twist or try something different, here are a few other ideas to enhance your Margarita. If you like peaches, try adding some fresh peach puree to your Margarita on the rocks or frozen. A blackberry and thyme Margarita is an excellent way to create a slightly savory cocktail. Or if you prefer summer’s number one fruit, watermelon, puree some watermelon to mix in with your other classic Margarita ingredients and add a spring of fresh basil for an herbal note. And there’s only one question from here. Salt or no salt? (There’s no wrong answer!)
