Everyone knows a classic martini: chilled gin and vermouth with an olive or a lemon twist. But speaking of twists, sometimes it’s fun to come up with a different version of something timeless. Martini variations are plentiful, but here are some of the most common.
Wet, dry and dirty martinis
Wet, dry and dirty don’t refer to the literal meanings of these words when it comes to martinis. Wet and dry refer to the amount of vermouth that is added. A dry martini is going to only have a little bit of vermouth – a 5:1 or 6:1 ratio to the gin – whereas a “wetter” martini will have a higher ratio. A dirty martini is one that adds a splash or two of olive brine to the mix. Some may order a martini that is “very dirty” or “filthy,” meaning they like a lot of olive brine.
Gin vs. vodka martinis
Many aficionados will tell you that a martini is not a martini unless it is made with gin. Despite this, you can make a martini with vodka; just substitute it for gin. A vodka martini may be a sin among some, but if you prefer it, it’s completely fine to drink.
The Perfect martini
As the name might suggest, this martini utilizes ‘perfect’ proportions; the same amount of sweet and dry vermouth paired with your choice of gin. Many prefer this variation on the martini because of the flavor profile. This helps it pair with a greater variety of foods.
The 50/50 martini
This martini is exactly as it sounds: an exact 50/50 split of London dry gin and dry vermouth. This is the original recipe for the martini, but it brings down the alcohol potency of the drink overall, and is far “wetter” than other variations.
The Gibson martini
Although this martini has been losing popularity in recent years, it was once a staple. This is a regular dry martini, except garnished with a small pickled onion instead of an olive.
Elderflower martini
The elderflower martini, much like others, is a variation that utilizes an extra ingredient. In this case, the new addition is St. Germain, an elderflower liqueur. This brings a bit of sweetness to the drink and helps bring out the floral notes of a great gin. It is made with your typical dry vermouth and London dry gin.
Lemon Drop martini
Often accompanied by a sugar rim, the lemon drop martini is a sweet citrus-forward cocktail. This is one of the most popular takes on a vodka martini that combines your choice of vodka with fresh lemon juice and simple syrup. From there, shaking until chilled will get you straight to the lemon drop. Some add an orange liqueur such as Cointreau to this drink, as well.
Espresso martini
Despite being made with vodka, this is many people’s favorite martini overall. The combination is as follows: vodka, coffee liqueur (usually Kahlua), freshly brewed espresso and simple syrup.
