When you think about celebrating the Fourth of July, you probably think about fireworks, burgers, hot dogs, and beer. Actually, wine—and Madeira wine in particular—played a significant role in the reason that we celebrate Independence Day in the first place.
When our Founding Fathers celebrated signing the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, they celebrated by toasting with—you guessed it—Madeira wine. A fortified wine made in the Portuguese Madeira islands off of the African coast, Madeira also was reputed to be a favorite of George Washington; some historical accounts say he drank some with dinner every single night. Therefore, if you want a historical twist on this year’s Fourth of July, uncork a bottle of wine.
You do not just have to choose Madeira. At Lincoln Road Package Store, we offer hundreds of different bottles of wine.
Here are a few suggestions (in addition to Madeira) to make your Independence Day bash a successful one:
- Sparkling wine: France aided the American Revolution en route to victory over the British, so why not give a nod to our longtime allies and choose a sparkling wine for your Independence Day get-together? Often referred to colloquially, and incorrectly, as champagne, sparkling wine pairs well with the salty snacks that have become mainstays at cookouts, such as popcorn, chips, and coleslaw.
- Albarino: This variety of wine originated in Portugal and Spain but made its way to the United States by way of Monterey County. Albarino wines also pair well with salty dishes… try it with fried chicken!
- Rosé: A rosé wine incorporates some of the color of the skins of the grapes used to make it, but not enough color to classify as a red wine. Often described as a pale, elegant choice, rosé wines go well with the main courses you often see at cookouts—fare like hot dogs and burgers—but they also serve as a nice complement to baked beans and potato salad.
- Zinfandel: Known as one of the most popular types of wines coming out of the state of California, it makes up about 10 percent of the wine produced out of all the vineyards in the Golden State. Its flavor pairs quite well with barbecued ribs.
