Winter is here, and who wants to go outside when you can stay in with a blanket and Netflix instead? A cozy night at home in the winter sounds nice, but it would sound better with a hot adult beverage. Here are some recipe suggestions for cocktails that will keep you warm throughout the coldest season of the year.

Coffee drinks

Irish coffee is one of the simplest drinks you can make. Just start with freshly brewed hot coffee, and add your whiskey of choice. Depending on your taste, you can add sugar, milk and even top this caffeinated concoction with whipped cream. If you are a home mixologist looking to show off your skills, consider serving up a batch of Pearl St. Warmers the next time you entertain. Concocted in the snowy Rocky Mountains at OAK at Fourteenth in Boulder, CO, this coffee drink adds rye whiskey, yellow chartreuse and honey topped with nutmeg and homemade whipped cream spiked with Leopold’s Three pins.

Hot chocolates

Spiked hot chocolate is the Swiss Army knife of warm adult beverages, as there are a variety of different ways you can make such a concoction. Baileys is a classic choice for spiked hot chocolate, as is peppermint schnapps. However, mixologists have come up with combinations that warm you up and please your palate, such as adding bacon and bourbon to hazelnut hot chocolate. Tequila even can be a good choice; paired with schnapps, we recommend adding two parts of tequila for every part of schnapps. Looking for a bold new direction? Spice up your spiked hot chocolate with mezcal, mixed with dried ancho chile and garnished with cinnamon sticks.

Hot toddies

Traditionally made of hot brewed tea mixed with brandy or whiskey, honey, and lemon, a hot toddy is a well-known warm alcoholic beverage and also has quite the reputation of being a home remedy for colds and coughs. Today you can find hot toddy recipes to match every palate preference, with people spiking their tea using gin, mezcal or even Riesling wine. You can even rethink the base recipe of a hot toddy by starting with brewed chai tea.

Spiked ciders

Adding a shot of whiskey to mulled cider is another classic choice. You also can pair the flavor of cider with another warm-weather classic—buttered rum. Combine your cider of choice with dark rum, then add maple syrup to provide a delicious sweetness. You can also pack your mulled cider with lots of fruit flavor by enhancing it with oranges, clementines, and even cranberries.

Buttered rum

A cold-weather tradition, this drink starts with a mixture that includes butter, honey, brown sugar, and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves then adds rum and boiling water to provide a delicious warm beverage. Choose a light or dark rum, depending on your preference. You also can top your buttered rum with ice cream as a sweet treat for adults at your next get-together.
